Occasionally, a person younger than age 18 may be diagnosed with borderline personality disorder if symptoms are significant and last at least a year. In diagnosing the illness, providers will discuss a person’s symptoms and ask about family medical histories, including histories of mental illness.īorderline personality disorder is usually diagnosed in late adolescence or early adulthood. A careful and thorough medical exam also can help rule out other possible causes of symptoms. How is borderline personality disorder diagnosed?Ī licensed mental health professional-such as a psychiatrist, psychologist, or clinical social worker-who is experienced in diagnosing and treating mental disorders can diagnose borderline personality disorder based on a thorough interview and a discussion about symptoms. Likewise, people without these risk factors may develop the disorder in their lifetime. Others may have been exposed to unstable, invalidating relationships or conflicts.Īlthough these factors may increase a person’s risk, it doesn’t mean it is certain that they’ll develop borderline personality disorder. Environmental, cultural, and social factors: Many people with borderline personality disorder report experiencing traumatic life events, such as abuse, abandonment, or hardship during childhood. However, the studies do not demonstrate whether these changes were risk factors for the illness or if such changes were caused by the disorder. Brain structure and function: Research shows that people with borderline personality disorder may have structural and functional changes in the brain, especially in the areas that control impulses and emotion regulation.Family history: People who have a close family member (such as a parent or sibling) with the illness may be at a higher risk of developing borderline personality disorder.Researchers aren’t sure what causes borderline personality disorder, but studies suggest that genetic, environmental, and social factors may increase the risk of developing it. What causes borderline personality disorder? You also can text the Crisis Text Line (HELLO to 741741) or use the Lifeline Chat on the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline website. If you or someone you know is in immediate distress or is thinking about hurting themselves, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline toll-free at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). People with borderline personality disorder who are thinking of harming themselves or attempting suicide need help right away. People with borderline personality disorder have a significantly higher rate of self-harming and suicidal behavior than the general population. ![]() The severity, frequency, and duration of symptoms depend on the person and their illness. Not everyone with borderline personality disorder may experience all of these symptoms. Feelings of dissociation, such as feeling cut off from oneself, observing oneself from outside one’s body, or feelings of unreality.Inappropriate, intense anger or problems controlling anger.Intense and highly variable moods, with episodes lasting from a few hours to a few days.Recurring thoughts of suicidal behaviors or threats.Self-harming behavior, such as cutting. Please note: If these behaviors happen mostly during times of elevated mood or energy, they may be symptoms of a mood disorder and not borderline personality disorder. Impulsive and often dangerous behaviors, such as spending sprees, unsafe sex, substance abuse, reckless driving, and binge eating.A distorted and unstable self-image or sense of self.A pattern of intense and unstable relationships with family, friends, and loved ones.Efforts to avoid real or perceived abandonment, such as plunging headfirst into relationships-or ending them just as quickly.Their interests and values can change quickly, and they may act impulsively or recklessly. People with borderline personality disorder also tend to view things in extremes, such as all good or all bad. These changing feelings can lead to unstable relationships and emotional pain. Their feelings for others can change quickly, and swing from extreme closeness to extreme dislike. People with borderline personality disorder may experience intense mood swings and feel uncertainty about how they see themselves. Learn more about the disorder, how it’s diagnosed, and how to find support. Effective treatments are available to manage the symptoms of borderline personality disorder. This loss of emotional control can increase impulsivity, affect how a person feels about themselves, and negatively impact their relationships with others. We present the following article in accordance with the Narrative Review Checklist (available at ). Many clinical and research questions remain unanswered in this field and this review highlights potential future avenues for investigation. While it is recognised that neurology has an important contribution, it is beyond the scope of this review to discuss this. ![]() This review will focus on the respiratory contribution to the development of sleep disturbance in CLD. Finally, liver dysfunction in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), and particularly the association with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), will be explored. The limited management options currently available for sleep disturbance in CLD will then be described. This review will discuss the prevalence and character of sleep disturbance in CLD and then describe possible pathophysiological mechanisms causing sleep disturbance within this population. In addition, patients with sleep disorders may be at increased risk of developing liver malignancy ( 3) it is therefore an important area to review. Sleep disturbance in patients with cirrhosis is independently associated with reduced health-related quality of life ( 1, 2). The association between sleep disturbance and chronic liver disease (CLD) is increasingly recognized as an important part of the disease course of patients with CLD. Keywords: Chronic liver disease cirrhosis non-alcoholic fatty liver disease sleep disturbance obstructive sleep apnoea There remain many outstanding areas of investigation in the management of sleep disturbance in CLD, and of liver dysfunction in OSA. Treatment of the intermittent hypoxia with continuous positive airway pressure therapy has limited efficacy against liver dysfunction. The presence of reactive oxygen species and the overexpression of hypoxia inducible factor 1-alpha secondary to hypoxia may be responsible for the second ‘hit’ of the ‘two-hit’ hypothesis of NAFLD. This chronic intermittent hypoxia appears to contribute to the development of NAFLD. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a common condition that causes chronic intermittent hypoxia due to airway collapse during sleep. ![]() There are currently limited management options for sleep disturbance in CLD. Specific conditions causing CLD, such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), chronic viral hepatitis and primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) result in different types of sleep disturbance, and the treatment of these conditions can often also lead to sleep disturbance. Key contributors to sleep disturbance include hepatic encephalopathy (HE) and circadian rhythm imbalance due to altered melatonin metabolism. Since all of the these white paint colors are so similar, the best way to determine which one will be right for you is to view it in your own space. But it is still a very light paint color. Westhighland White has just a hint of a beige undertone, which makes it a little bit more of a color. Greek Villa and Westhighland White are also very similar paint colors. If you like the idea of a warm white such as Alabaster but want something that’s just a bit brighter, go with Greek Villa.Ĭlick here for a full color review on Alabaster. Of course, when you compare Greek Villa to a pure white you see that it does have a hint of color in it. It looks like more of a pure white when you compare the two. They both have yellow undertones, but Alabaster has a bit of gray in it.Īgain, Alabaster has an LRV that is very similar to Greek Villa’s. Greek Villa and Alabaster are very similar. Let’s look at Greek villa and compare it to several other popular white or off-white paint colors. I find that this helps people determine which paint color is the right one for their home. When I look at paint colors, I always like to compare them to other popular paint colors. Greek Villa is great in the traditional style, farmhouse style, or even contemporary style home. It’s not one that goes out of style easily, because it is so soft, and so neutral. Overall, Greek Villa paint is a very classic color. From this information, you can see the Greek Villa is a very light paint color. The LRV scale goes from zero, which is entirely black, to 100, which is entirely white. This means that it is a very light color, just a hint off-white. Greek Villa has an LRV (Light Reflectance Value) of 84. A bit of yellow, maybe a hint of green, and not much else. Greek Villa paint actually has fairly little in the way of undertones. This is because Greek Villa has light yellow undertones. More than likely, no matter how that room looked from your perspective, the reason why it hurt your eyes and brain is that it lacked cohesion.Īccording to Gestalt psychology, even though our eyes are constantly taking in information, our brains try and boil everything down to the simplest, recognizable pattern. ![]() We’ve probably all had the unpleasant experience of walking into a room that is just too much to handle. Put simply, cohesion is important because it makes rooms easier to digest. In truth, sticking to one unified aesthetic in a home rather than having distinctly themed rooms is one of the tools professional interior designers use to take their work to the next / Twenty20 Why cohesion matters Think of how you can incorporate them, not only in each room, but throughout your house as a whole. These principles are used to create a sense of cohesion in the space. Unity refers to the repetition of particular elements throughout your design - whether they’re colors, shapes or materials - to pull the look together. ![]() The important takeaway is that each distinct piece seems to belong together in some way, even if it is not identical to anything else. They may fit the same theme, aesthetic style or mood. Harmony is the sense that all of the elements of your design fit together. Though unity and harmony may sound similar, they each play distinct roles in the way we experience interior design. Though they may seem simple at first glance, we can almost guarantee that they play a much bigger role than you think. Read on to learn what these concepts are, why they’re important, and how to make them work in your own interiors. I laughed and said he was “killing them with kindness!” Then I told him to plant his cowpeas on the poorest sandiest soil he had. He said he was planting them in rich soil amended with lots of chicken manure. About a dozen years ago, I was talking with Glenn Drowns planning what I would grow for him that year and he mentioned that he was failing miserably growing cowpeas. I thought of something else that makes a good story. Note for those of you who get the cart ahead of the horse, I am NOT talking about Runner Beans! I know of a purple seed bean - Rio Zappe - but it is a western sprawling variety, not a climber. Of all the “lost” varieties I’ve heard about over the years, the one I wish most I could find is a purple seed pole bean that had a history of being grown by Native Americans in the midwest. I also give good marks to Cowhorn and Jing Orange if you are interested in some of his other varieties. He described it to me as the okra that he gave to a preacher - originally from the deep south - and was told that this was the way okra should taste. Glenn sells it as “Granny Franklin” okra. But… A local heirloom provided by a woman in my area is my hands down favorite okra because it can be fried, baked, boiled, dried, and pickled and is excellent in each usage. Flip side of this, I grew half a dozen other varieties of okra that were very good and well worth a repeat. ![]() They are so totally non-productive that it is not worth producing seed. As an example, I grew 3 or 4 varieties of okra over the years that I will never touch again. ![]() On the other hand, there is a good possibility of finding a new-to-you vegetable that you will never be without. ![]() With heirlooms, there is a roughly 30% risk of total failure in a given climate. ![]() The project cost some $23.8 billion, a total that drew some criticism for being over budget. To build it, NASA contracted several companies-Northrop Grumman worked on the boosters, Aerojet Rocketdyne built the engines, and Boeing built the rocket’s orange core stage. It stands at 32 stories tall and weighs nearly 6 million pounds. The SLS is the most powerful rocket ever built, period. The SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft sit on a mobile launcher in front of a full moon on June 14. What’s special about the mission’s rocket, called the Space Launch System? Navy ship that will recover the spacecraft. If it survives, Orion will splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego, within view of a U.S. The craft and its heat shield will have to endure temperatures of 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit-a crucial part of this test mission, since NASA can’t artificially create these conditions on the ground, reports Gizmodo’s George Dvorsky. On October 10, the Orion spacecraft will make a roaring return to our atmosphere-it will be moving at 6.8 miles per second, the fastest reentry of any capsule built for humans. ![]() Then, it’ll fire its engines at just the right time to be propelled back toward Earth, with the aid of the moon’s gravity. The spacecraft will complete up to one and a half revolutions in lunar orbit, where it will set a record for the farthest any spacecraft that can carry a crew has traveled. As Orion flies toward the moon, a service module provided by the European Space Agency will course-correct as needed. The 42-day Artemis 1 mission will test the Orion spacecraft, a capsule that will orbit the moon and one day carry human crew members there. Once in the atmosphere, Orion will begin in Earth's orbit, then soar through space powered by the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS), a 45-foot long cylindrical system with one engine. As NASA’s massive Space Launch System (SLS) rocket sits on the launch pad ahead of this historic mission, here’s what you need to know about the program making headlines around the world. These measures will lay the groundwork for yet another first in the future: sending astronauts to Mars.īut before all that happens, the space agency has to test its equipment with the flight of Artemis 1, which will break records of its own. NASA postponed the first launch of the Artemis 1 mission's Space Launch System rocket on August 29 due to a temperature problem with one of four liquid-fuel engines. This morning NASA called off its second attempt to launch its new moon rocket due to a leak in its hydrogen fuel line. |
